Who runs attendance in Bengaluru
A restaurant or cafe group with three to six outlets across Koramangala, HSR Layout and Indiranagar runs fifteen to eighty people. Cooks, servers and baristas draw a monthly salary. Part-timers cover the weekend rush and the late dinner service, paid for the shifts they turn up for, which makes the shift count the payroll.
An hour of traffic north, a Peenya engineering or fabrication workshop of ten to sixty keeps machinists and welders on monthly wages by skill grade, helpers and loaders on a daily wage. Facility services contractors staffing Electronic City campuses add a third basis. Restaurants, manufacturing units, retail shops and salons all end the month on one question: how many days each person worked, and where.
What makes it hard here
Sixteen kilometres an hour decides who is late
Commuters here lost 168 hours to congestion in 2025, and rush-hour speeds sit near 16.6 km/h. A server who leaves home on time for the lunch shift still walks in after the start, so the register fills with late marks that describe the road and not the person.
The dinner shift opens while the lunch shift is still counting
Cafes split the day into a lunch service and a dinner service with a mid-afternoon break between them. On a paper sheet, a cook who works both and a part-timer who works only the evening look identical at the foot of the page. Two shifts keep them apart.
One wet evening at Hebbal empties the punch-out list
Rain floods the Hebbal, KR Puram and Bannerghatta Road approaches, and staff sit in it for hours. Some never reach the outlet. Some reach it and forget to check out. An admin corrects those days, or the leave module settles them as approved leave or loss of pay.
Part-timers who worked nine evenings and are on nobody's list
Kitchen and floor churn runs high, and hires from Jharkhand, Odisha and Assam join mid-month. Someone who covered nine evenings in March is remembered by one manager and by no register. Each person gets a login code the day they join, so the ninth shift sits with the first.
Geofencing around Bengaluru
Set the radius outlet by outlet. A cafe in Indiranagar stands in a row of them, so a tight circle stops a punch drifting in from the restaurant two doors down. A Peenya workshop covers sheds, a yard and a gate, so it takes a wider one. Chickpet and Avenue Road shops sit in lanes narrow enough that a loose circle would take in the counter next door.
Shifts, grace and late marks
One business here can carry three start times. A cafe divides into a lunch shift and a dinner shift with a mid-afternoon break, so each gets its own start, grace window and late mark. A Peenya general shift runs roughly 9:00 to 17:30, with a second shift during order peaks. Grace has to answer 16.6 km/h at rush hour. Set it to the delay you would forgive on a normal evening.
How a rollout usually goes
Take a cafe group of about fifty people across four Bengaluru outlets. The owner starts with one: it becomes an office, gets a radius, a workweek and a holiday list, and the manager there is the first admin. The lunch and dinner shifts are entered, then staff, each with an assigned outlet, a shift and a login code. The other three outlets follow over the fortnight after. The paper sheet runs alongside for a few weeks, and the first month without it closes off the app record.
A worked example
Say a cafe group pays a full-time cook INR 17,500 a month against 26 payable days. That is INR 17,500 / 26 = INR 673.08 a day, rounded to two decimals. He picks up one late mark that the manager converts to a half day, so INR 673.08 / 2 = INR 336.54 comes off, leaving INR 17,163.46. A part-timer on the same floor sits on a day rate of INR 450 and works 18 shifts that month, giving INR 450 x 18 = INR 8,100. Figures are illustrative.
Seasons and local holidays
Kannada Rajyotsava on 1 November closes offices and most shops, with flag hoisting through the day. Ugadi falls on 19 March 2026 and staff with family in Karnataka and Andhra take extra days around it. Ayudha Puja and Dasara stop the workshops. Ganesh Chaturthi on 15 September thins evening service.
Frequently asked questions
My Koramangala and Indiranagar outlets are minutes apart. Can one server check in at either?
No. Each person is assigned to one office, and a check-in is accepted only near that one. If a server covers a different outlet for an evening, the punch there will not go through, and an admin marks that day on the attendance list instead. The correction stays visible on the record.
Traffic makes half my dinner staff late. How do I stop every evening becoming a late mark?
Set the grace window on the dinner shift itself. Each shift carries its own start time and allowance, so the evening roster runs on a longer grace than the lunch one. Anyone past the window still gets a late mark, which an admin can waive. Mark and waiver both reach the admin desk.
We pay part-timers per shift and the servers keep their tips. Will the app work that out?
It counts the shifts. Enter the part-timer on daily wages at a day rate, and the month's earning comes off the days the record shows they worked. Tips stay outside VTClock: it does not pool them, split them or add them to a slip. It does not compute an hourly rate either.
Our Peenya workshop adds a second shift during order peaks. Do I re-enter the whole team?
No. The second shift is set up once with its own timing and its own grace, and the people moving onto it are assigned to it for as long as the peak runs. Their office does not change, so the geofence stays. They return to the general shift when the order ships.
Does the app handle the Karnataka wage schedule, PF or ESI?
No. Karnataka fixes wages by scheduled employment, skill grade and zone, with the BBMP area in the top zone, and the dearness component is revised annually. Ask your consultant for the figure that applies to your grade. VTClock holds no statutory rate: EPF, ESI, professional tax and TDS sit outside it, and no challan comes out of the app.
